Why Gender Equity & Legal Advocacy

Gender-based violence (GBV), domestic violence (DV), and discrimination against women and LGBTQIA+ individuals persist as pervasive issues across India, particularly in underserved rural regions. These injustices stem from entrenched patriarchal norms, social taboos, lack of awareness about rights, and insufficient access to legal support. Women and gender minorities often lack the means, knowledge, or confidence to report violations or seek justice. Therefore, interventions are required not just to respond to cases of violence but to proactively prevent them by addressing root causes, strengthening institutional responses, and building a culture of equality and justice.

Asian Bridge India (ABI) takes a holistic, community-based approach to address gender inequity. The organization:

  • Provides legal literacy and access to legal aid services
  • Empowers vulnerable individuals through rights-based education
  • Trains gatekeepers such as teachers, health workers, and community leaders
  • Encourages dialogue within families to challenge harmful gender norms
  • Promotes youth leadership and involvement in social justice ABI acts as a bridge between survivors and support systems, ensuring that those affected by violence are heard, protected, and empowered.
